New/Used Shop Technician

Department: Service
Location: Gillette, WY

GENERAL PURPOSE 

To diagnose and repair construction equipment, mining equipment, on-highway trucks and forklifts.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES 

Regularly trouble shoots and inspects customer's equipment by visual inspection, and by the use of testing and diagnostic equipment to determine problems or malfunction. Regularly removes, repairs or replaces components or piece parts on engines, hydraulic systems, brake systems, electrical systems, air systems, fuel systems, transmissions and related power train systems. These repairs must meet or exceed the expectations of the Shop Supervisor and the customer. Regularly writes detailed and accurate service reports stating the nature of the job and what has been done. Must be able to work rotating shift; to include days, evening and nights.

OTHER DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES 

Regularly reviews data from the trouble shooting and inspection process to work up detailed, accurate and cost effective job estimates. Regularly reviews data from the troubleshooting and inspection process to work up detailed and accurate parts orders. Regularly is required to operate mining equipment, construction equipment, and on-highway trucks. Must work with a positive attitude and with a spirit of cooperation.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY 

Shop mechanics must be able to read and understand English, read and understand parts books, service manuals and electrical and hydraulic schematics. Mechanics should be able to safely rig or hook for lifting any part or component of a machine. Must have good written and oral communication skills. Mechanics must have a mechanical background, must have the ability to think and work their way thru difficult projects or problems. Must have previous experience and an understanding of computers including typing skills, must have a basic understanding of personal computer programs.

EDUCATION OR FORMAL TRAINING 

Shop mechanics must have the ability to read and comprehend service literature and basic measuring tools and to know and understand basic arithmetic. Must be able to write meaningful and legible service

Reports. Must know and understand the various types of systems on a large number of different kinds of equipment, and must be able to use their ability in a meaningful and productive manner during the course

of their daily job assignment.

EXPERIENCE 

Shop mechanics need to have been exposed to construction equipment, mining equipment, and truck engines thru Technical schools or on the job training as a mechanic or mechanics helper at a repair shop, truck shop, construction company, small contractor or a mine.

MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED 

Shop mechanics regularly use: Hand wrenches, hammers, impact tools, torque wrenches. screw drivers, basic measuring tools, overhead hoists, slings and chains, electrical testing equipment, hydraulic

test equipment and numerous other specialized testing and adjusting equipment. Most often the employee must furnish the majority of the above hand tools. Shop mechanics will also use a PC on a daily basis.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES  

In a standard 8 hour shift a worker must:

1. Walk and/or stand 5-8 hours on concrete floor in the shop or outside that maybe very warm or cold.

2. Sit 1-3 hours

3. 50 lb weight lifting restriction.

4. Use hand for simple grasping, pushing & pulling and fine manipulation.

5. Use feet frequently in repetitive movement.

6. Frequently bend, squat and climb.

7. Use of ladders and steps for accessing equipment.

8. Have the physical ability to work in any position on a piece of equipment and the stamina to torque a  

     series of bolts.

9. Be willing to be exposed to grease, oil and dirt.

10. Be willing to work overtime as needed.
